Alternation of generation:

  1. Alternation of generation is also known as metagenesis.
  2. It is the alternation of sexual and asexual phases in the life cycle of a plant.
  3. In most plants, alternation of generation is common.
  4. Here sexual phase or gametophyte generation produces sex cells and asexual or sporophyte generation produces spores.
  5. In non-vascular plants such as bryophytes, gametophyte phase is dominant
  6. Plants which are pteridophytes, gymnosperms, and angiosperms have dominant sporophyte phase.
