Question

Does anaerobic respiration use the TCA cycle?

Open in App
Solution

Anaerobic respiration:

  1. The respiration that occurs without molecular oxygen is known as anaerobic respiration.
  2. The pyruvate obtained from glycolysis undergoes incomplete breakdown releasing only 2 ATPs.
  3. The end products are carbon dioxide and ethanol (in yeast) or lactic acid (in animals).

TCA cycle:

  1. The tricarboxylic acid cycle or TCA cycle is also known as Krebs or Citric acid cycle.
  2. This cycle involves a series of chemical reactions used by aerobic organisms.
  3. TCA cycle occurs in mitochondria during aerobic respiration to release energy, water, and carbon dioxide through the oxidation process.
  4. So, anaerobic respiration does not use the TCA cycle.
