Atrial Natriuretic peptide (ANP):
- The atrial natriuretic peptide is a hormone that exerts a vasodilator effect on the kidneys and reduces the rate of tubular absorption of sodium.
- Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is the volume of plasma filtered by the glomeruli per unit time and is measured by estimating the rate of substance clearance from the plasma.
- The ANP increases the GFR.
- It increases it by inducing vasodilation of the afferent arterioles.
- This allows increased blood flow to the glomerulus to undergo ultrafiltration.
- ANP stimulated diuresis and natriuresis by causing the afferent arteriole to vasodilate and contracts the efferent arteriole.
- It increases the excretion of urinary sodium by inhibiting sodium reabsorption across the inner medullary collecting duct.
