Question

Does ANP increase GFR?

Open in App
Solution

Atrial Natriuretic peptide (ANP):

  1. The atrial natriuretic peptide is a hormone that exerts a vasodilator effect on the kidneys and reduces the rate of tubular absorption of sodium.
  2. Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is the volume of plasma filtered by the glomeruli per unit time and is measured by estimating the rate of substance clearance from the plasma.
  3. The ANP increases the GFR.
  4. It increases it by inducing vasodilation of the afferent arterioles.
  5. This allows increased blood flow to the glomerulus to undergo ultrafiltration.
  6. ANP stimulated diuresis and natriuresis by causing the afferent arteriole to vasodilate and contracts the efferent arteriole.
  7. It increases the excretion of urinary sodium by inhibiting sodium reabsorption across the inner medullary collecting duct.
