Question

Does C60 conduct electricity??

Open in App
Solution

yes
because
All fullerenes have a structure similar to graphite in that each carbon atom forms single covalent bonds with three neighbouring carbon atoms. This forms a hexagonal plane structure, which can be bent to form different fullerenes. Since each carbon atom has four bonding electrons, one electron remains unbonded in each carbon atom. These electrons form a sea of delocalised electrons similar to that found in a metal. These can move throughout the fullerene, allowing conduction of electricity
