Question

Does chemiosmosis require oxygen?

Open in App
Solution

Chemiosmosis:

  1. Chemiosmosis is the process of moving ions to the other side of the biological (mitochondrial) membrane to generate ATP.
  2. The process of chemiosmosis is driven by the generation of a proton gradient by the transfer of electrons in the electron transport chain.
  3. Oxygen acts as the final electron acceptor in the electron transport chain
  4. Without oxygen, the electron transport chain will stop and there will be no generation of ATP.
  5. So, oxygen is an important thing in the chemiosmosis process.
