Question

Does Concentration affect Electrolysis?

Open in App
Solution

The effect of concentration on electrolysis is explained below as:

  1. The resistance decreases as the concentration increases and this reduces the potential difference. And with the same amount of current, more metal is inserted in the cell with a greater potential difference. Potential variations should also be a regulated variable in order to assess the influence of the electrolyte concentration.
  2. Therefore, a relationship can be formed where increasing the electrolyte concentration will behave similarly to increasing the electrolytic rate current and will result in a higher reaction rate.
  3. The electrolysis efficiency increases, when a higher concentration of the electrolyte is at the cathode than at the anode.

The effect of concentration on electrolysis is explained through the above points.
