Question

Does effective nuclear charge increase across and down the group?

No....... Is it correct?

Open in App
Solution

It decreases down a group, which is why fluorine is more electronegative than iodine. This is because the extra electron shells provide more shielding.

It increases across a period because putting more electrons in the same energy level doesn't provide much more shielding and the increased charge wins out.
