Question

Does friction depends on the smoothness or the roughness of the surfaces in contact?

Open in App
Solution

  1. There are irregularities in the surface of the objects although if they appear smooth.
  2. These irregularities get interlocked when two surfaces come in contact.
  3. This interlocking is mainly responsible for friction.
  4. If surface is smooth then irregularities are less and if it is rough then irregularities are more.

Hence, friction depends on the smoothness or the roughness of the surfaces in contact.
