Question

Does gasoline affect silicone?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Yes, Gasoline affects Silicon. Silicon gets dissolved or broken down in the presence of gasoline.
  2. Flexible materials like Silicon and Rubber are kept away from gasoline since they are porous in nature and get brittle in presence of petroleum and are eventually degraded.
  3. Silicon should be avoided to manufacture products like hoses and sealants for gasoline. Some blends of silicon might last longer but will eventually breakdown over time with prolonged exposure to gasoline. Fuel resistant materials like hylomar are used for this purpose.
