Question

Does higher electronegativity mean stronger acid?

Open in App
Solution

The increasing electronegativity affects the acidic strength in the following ways:

  1. According to Arrhenius's concept, acidity is the tendency of a compound to release H+ ions when dissolved in water.
  2. If the central atom is highly electronegative, then it pulls electron, polarizes the bond and make the molecule more stable.
  3. The more stable molecule, acidic strength becomes higher.

Therefore, higher electronegativity tends to stronger acid.
