Does insulin use a second messenger?

Open in App
Solution

Second messengers of Insulin:

  1. Insulin hormone is produced by the beta cells of the Islets of Langerhans in the pancreas.
  2. It regulates the glucose level in the bloodstream and enables the cells to absorb glucose molecules.
  3. Second messenger molecules are intracellular signaling molecules released by the cell in response to an extracellular signaling molecule.
  4. Two molecules have been identified to function as second messengers to insulin and transduce signals from insulin to the target cells.
  5. The second messenger molecules are phospho-oligosaccharide and diacylglycerol. They are derived from the glycolipids present in the plasma membrane.
  6. These molecules are hydrolyzed in response to insulin.
