Question

Does iodoform exhibit antiseptic property?

Open in App
Solution

  • Antiseptics can be defined as antimicrobial agents which can be applied to the body of living organisms to inhibit the action of microbes.
  • They are not injected into the body like antibiotics, rather they are applied on the surface of the skin to heal the living tissues in case of wounds and cuts.
  • Dettol is the most commonly used antiseptic.
  • Iodoform (CHI3) also has antiseptic properties.
  • It is used as an antiseptic for dressing wounds but the antiseptic action is due to the liberation of free iodine and not due to iodoform.
