Question

Does moonlight support photosynthesis?

Open in App
Solution

Moonlight supports photosynthesis or not :

● Photosynthesis is a process that occurs in multiple steps, which can be broadly classified as light dependent and light independent reactions.

● In the light dependent reactions, the electrons of the photosystem get excited on absorbing the light energy from the sunlight. But the light energy from the moon does not have this ability to excite the electrons of the photosystem.

● Which implies that light dependent reactions will not occur in the presence of moonlight.

● Dark reaction of photosynthesis depends on the products of the light reaction.

● Thus, plants will not be able to perform photosynthesis in the moonlight.
