Nitrogen has 5 electrons in its outermost shell. When it forms three covalent bond it has one lone pair. For ex., in NH3. Nitrogen out of its five electron it forms three covalent bond with three hydrogen and one pair of electron does not participate in bond formation called as lone pair. Thus the structure is : NH3
