Question

Does the effect of pressure change objects from one state to the other? Or it only changes gases into liquids?

Open in App
Solution

It is defined that the process by which a substance in its solid state changes to gaseous state directly, without converting into liquid, due to increase in temperature and/or decrease in pressure which is known as sublimation.

Also applying pressure and reducing temperature can liquify gases

Applying pressure means forcing the particles of matter towards each other (reducing the free space between the particles). Thus, the application of pressure reduces the inter-particle distance. As a result, the application of large pressure changes the gas into liquid first and then into a solid.
As we apply pressure, inter-particle distance decreases which leads to a change of state.
And also solid carbon dioxide converts directly to gaseous state on decrease of pressure to 1 atmosphere without coming into liquid state. This is the reason that solid carbon dioxide is also known as dry ice.
Increase in pressure converts a gas into liquid and a liquid into solid and decrease in the pressure converts a slid into liquid and a liquid into gas.

But usually simple change of pressure does not help in change of state unless the substance is already at converting temperature. It is basically temperature which brings the change. Change of pressure only assists in desired change of state.

One exception is there.

In case of ice (solid water) increase of pressure converts the solid into liquid. This is because of H-bonding among the molecules of H2O. Hence effect of pressure changes onjects from one state to other.
