Question

Does the light travel in multiple directions or only in single direction?

Open in App
Solution

A single real photon has a definite momentum (to within limits imposed by the uncertainty principle) and thus generally travels in a more-or-less definite direction. If however the wave packet representing the photon is spatially well localized, then the momentum uncertainty is large and you can say that it travels in a range of directions at the same time.
