Question

Does the occurrence of the diversity of animals on earth suggest their diverse ancestry also? Discuss this point in the light of evolution.

Solution

Diversity of animals:

  1. The diversities, which have resulted among the animals via adaptations and essential modifications of their internal and external morphology, shape, size, behavior, etc. are known as animal diversity.
  2. The animals seen today exhibit a vast diversity in their morphology, thus, they must possess diverse ancestry too.
  3. The concept of common ancestry would greatly confine the extent of biodiversity.
  4. For example, all the birds are closely associated and possess common ancestors, however, bats also possess wings, which are closely associated with birds.
  5. Thus, if one classifies species based on the evolutionary relationship, one can come up with small groups of organisms with recent common ancestors.
  6. Similarly, one can keep going backward in this classification to come up with a single species at the very beginning of the evolutionary time.
  7. However, having a single ancestor would restrict the diversity witnessed in the organisms at present.
  8. Therefore, it can be suggested that the occurrence of animals on Earth also indicates their diverse ancestry.
