Question

Does the size/diameter of an artery affect blood flow?

Open in App
Solution

Artery:

A blood vessel that transports blood from the heart to the body's tissues and organs is called an artery.

Blood flow:

The movement of blood through a channel, tissue, or organ is known as blood flow.

Affect of dimension on blood flow:

  1. As the size or diameter of the artery shrinks, so does the resistance, as does the flow of blood.
  2. Peripheral resistance is affected by vessel diameter.
  3. A larger percentage of the fluid is in contact with the tube wall as a tube's diameter decreases.
  4. Pressure increases as a result of the increased flow resistance; greater diameter, identical volume, and lower pressure.
