Question

Draw a labeled diagram of stomata when guard cells are turgid.

Open in App
Solution

What happens when guard cells are turgid:

  1. Guard cells are used by most plants to control the size of their stomata.
  2. A pair of bean-shaped guard cells surround each of the stomata.
  3. The guard cells absorb water by osmosis in strong light and become swollen and turgid, resulting in the opening of the stomatal pore.
  4. The guard cells lose water in low light and become flaccid, which causes the stomata to close.
