Draw a line segment PQ=6.8cm. Draw a perpendicular to it from a point A outside PQ by using ruler and compass.

Given : A line segment PQ=6.8cm and a point A outside PQ.

Required : To draw a perpendicular to PQ from the point A.

Steps of construction

1. Draw a line segment PQ=6.8cm, and A be any point outside PQ.

2. With A as centre and any suitable radius, draw an arc to the line segment PQ at points C and D.

3. With C and D as centres, draw two arcs of equal radius (>12CD) cutting each other at B on the other side of PQ.

4. Draw a line through A and B to intersect the line segment PQ at E, then the line segment AE, is the required perpendicular from the point A to the line segment PQ.
