Question

Draw a neat diagram of an AC Generator and explain its work in brief.

Open in App
Solution

Principle and working of electric generator:

  1. An ac generator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy
  2. It usually supplies electrical energy in the form of a sinusoidal wave of alternating current
  3. The input energy is supplied to the generator in form of steam turbines, gas turbines, or combustion engines
  4. The electric generator works on the principle of faradays law of electromagnetism
  5. The law states that the change in the magnetic field flux in the wire produces an electromotive force (emf)
  6. An electric generator consists of the armature, prime mover, slip ring, brush, rotor, etc
  7. The armature consists of coils of wires and is linked to the flux produced for emf generation.
  8. The rotor is the rotating part of the generator connected to the prime mover.
  9. The slip rings transfer current from rotor to output and vice versa.
  10. When the armature rotates due to the rotor the magnetic field flux linked to it changes.
  11. This change induces an emf according to faradays law.
  12. This emf is passed through slip rings into an output voltage.
  13. Below shows a diagram of an AC generator with all its parts.
