Steps of construction :

(1) Draw a line segment LM = 5.5 cm.
(2) At L, draw $\angle XLM$ = 90° and at M, draw $\angle YML$ = 90° (since each angle in a rectangle is of 90°)
(3) Taking L as centre, draw an arc of radius 3.5 cm, which intersects XL at P.
(4) Taking M as centre, draw an arc of radius 3.5 cm that intersects YM at N.
(5) Join P and N.
The required rectangle LMNP is thus drawn.
