Steps of construction :

(1) Draw a line segment PQ = 4 cm.
(2) At P, draw $∠ X P Q$ = 90° and at Q, draw $∠ Y Q P$ = 90° (since each angle in a square is of 90°)
(3) Taking P as centre, draw an arc of radius 4 cm that intersects XP at S.
(4) Taking Q as centre, draw an arc of radius 4 cm that intersects YQ at R.
(5) Join S and R.
The required square PQRS is thus drawn.
