Question

Draw a velocity-time graph to show the motion of a car which accelerates uniformly from rest for 5s, and then it travels at a steady velocity for 5s.

Solution

Step 1: Given data

The motion of a car which accelerates uniformly from rest for 5s, and then it travels at a steady velocity for 5s.

Step 2: Drawing a velocity-time graph

  1. According to question for time t=0 to t=5s acceleration is constant.
  2. Therefore the slope of the velocity-time graph will be constant and positive for time t=0 to t=5s.
  3. Now, for time t=5s to t=10s velocity is constant, therefore the slope of the velocity-time graph will be zero.

Hence, the portion of the graph during the constant velocity interval will be a horizontal line parallel to the time axis.
