Importance of fuse: A fuse in a circuit prevents damage to the appliances and the circuit due to overloading. By melting, the fuse wire breaks the circuit and thus helps in saving the wiring or the appliance from damage.
A burnt out fuse should be replaced by another fuse of identical rating because if we replace it with a fuse of different rating then the joule heating fails to melt the fuse and hence, the circuit is not broken. This results in burning of the appliance.
