Human respiratory system:

  1. The human respiratory system is made up of various organs like the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi and lungs.
  2. The main function of the respiratory system is to conduct the exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen between the blood and the external environment

Nose:

  1. Nose is the external visible part of the respiratory system.
  2. The air enters the respiratory system through the nose and passes through the nasal cavity to reach pharynx.

Pharynx:

  1. The pharynx is the common passage for food and air.
  2. It is present behind the mouth, nose and larynx.

Larynx:

  1. Larynx is the upper part of the trachea and is also called the voice box.
  2. The opening of the larynx is protected by a muscular flap called the epiglottis.

Trachea:

  1. The trachea, also known as the windpipe, functions as the airway and connects the larynx to the bronchi of the lungs.

Bronchi/Bronchus:

  1. Bronchi are the main respiratory airways found in the lungs.
  2. They are responsible for the conduction and cleaning of the air present in the respiratory pathway.

Lungs:

  1. Lungs are present in the thoracic cavity and are responsible for respiration in humans.
  2. They also have a significant role in the protection of the body against infection from pathogens.
