Draw diagram showing micelle formation by the following detergent.
CH3(CH2)10CH2OSO3Na
Sodium lauryl sulphate, CH3(CH2)10CH2OSO−3+NNa is an example of anionic detergent.
When added to water, it dissociates as follows
CH3(CH2)10−CH2OSO−3+NNa+H2O−−−−→CH3−(CH2)10CH2−OSO−3++Na
These anions are present on the surface with their - OSO3 groups in water and hydrocarbon part staying away from it and remain at the surface.
At higher concentration. these anions are pulled into the bulk of the solution and form an aggregate of spherical shape with their hydrocarbon pad pointing towards the center. The OSO−3 pad outwards on the surface of the sphere.
An aggregate thus formed is known as the micelle.
