Solution

  • The method for the separation of a mixture of common salt and ammonium chloride is sublimation.
  • In this ammonium chloride is a sublimable substance while NaCl(common salt) is a non-sublimable substance.
  • Procedure for separation is as follows:
  • Take a mixture of common salt and ammonium chloride in a china dish.
  • The mixture is put on a burner then.
  • Cover the china dish with an inverted glass funnel.
  • On the open end of the funnel place a cotton plug so as to prevent vapors from escaping.
  • Then the burner is made on.
  • Vapors of ammonium chloride are formed. On rising these vapors get condensed.
  • Ammonium chloride in the form of a white solid is obtained.
  • Common salt remains in the china dish.
