Steps of construction:
(1) Draw segments ST and KL of different lengths.

(2) Draw a line m and mark any point D on the line.
(3) Taking the arc radius equal to the length of segment ST, draw an arc with D as centre which cuts the line m at point F.
(4) Taking the arc radius equal to the length of segment KL, draw an arc of radius KL with F as centre on the opposite side of point D, which interests the line at point E.
(5) The segment DE has a length equal to the sum of lengths of segments ST and KL.
