Question

Draw segments ST and PQ of unequal lengths. Draw a segment MN equal in length to the difference of their lengths.

Open in App
Solution

Steps of construction:
(1) Draw the segments ST and PQ of different lengths.

(2) Draw a line m and mark any point M on the line.
(3) Taking the arc radius equal to the length of segment which is greater, draw an arc with M as centre which cuts the line m at point O.
(4) Taking the arc radius equal to the length of the shorter segment, draw an arc of that radius with O as centre on the same side of point M, which intersects the line at point N.
(5) The segment MN has a length equal to the difference of lengths of segments ST and PQ.
