Double pole switches are the dual control switches that are used for the top and bottom of a staircase or the opposite ends of a long corridor. These switches can be used as On and OFF from the two different places.
The double pole switch is in the off position when it is connected to two separate electric circuits as shown below in the diagram.
The bulb will not glow independently by using the switch $S_{1}$ and $S_{2}$ . When it is connected to the switch $S_{1}$ then the connection a $a b$ is not changed to $b c$ . Similarly, when it is connected to the switch $S_{2}$ then the connection of $b c$ is not changed to $a b$ which is not used to complete the circuit.
