  1. The alimentary canal is an important component of the digestive system.
  2. It is an eight to ten meters long continuous muscular tube.
  3. The mouth is at the anterior end, and the anus is at the posterior end.
  4. The alimentary canal is responsible for food digestion.
  5. It reduces the size of the food.
  6. It aids in the absorption of the digested food.

Structure of alimentary canal:

  1. The alimentary canal of a human starts at the mouth and ends in the oesophagus.
  2. The human takes food through the mouth, which consists of teeth, and tongue.
  3. Then the alimentary canal leads to the oesophagus, which connects the mouth and stomach.
  4. The next part is the stomach which is a muscular bag-like structure.
  5. Protein digestion occurs in the stomach by the action of digestive enzymes.
  6. The food then enters the small intestine.
  7. The small intestine is the longest organ of the alimentary canal.
  8. It has three parts: duodenum, jejunum, ileum.
  9. Protein, carbohydrates, and lipid digestion, absorption occurs in the small intestine.
  10. The large intestine is the last part of the alimentary canal.
  11. It is divisible into three parts such as colon, caecum, and rectum.
  12. The waste materials are deposited and excreted through it.
