Question

Draw the figure and its reflection in

  1. the x- axis and
  2. the y-axis.

Identify the coordinates of the image.

A(2,0),B(1,5),C(4,3)

Solution

Step 1: Find the coordinates of image after reflection in the x-axis.

Given, coordinates A(2,0),B(1,5),C(4,3)

As we know the reflection about the x-axis then coordinates changes as,

A(x,y)=A'(x,-y)

Reflection in the x-axis:

A(2,0)=A'(2,0)B(1,5)=B'(1,-5)C(4,3)=C'(4,-3)

Step 2: Draw the figure for reflection in the x-axis.

Step 3: Find the coordinates of image after reflection in the y-axis.

As we know the reflection about the y-axis then coordinates changes as,

A(x,y)=A'(-x,y)

Reflection in the x-axis:

A(2,0)=A'(-2,0)B(1,5)=B'(-1,5)C(4,3)=C'(-4,3)

Step 4: Draw the figure for reflection in the y-axis.

Step 5: Final answer.

Hence, the coordinates after reflection in the x-axis and for y-axis are A'(2,0),B'(1,-5),C'(4,-3) and A'(-2,0),B'(-1,5),C'(-4,3).
