Question

Draw the gas phase and solid phase structure of H2O2

Open in App
Solution

The gas phase and solid structure of H2O2 is shown below

Hydrogen peroxide has a non-planar structure. Its molecular dimensions in the gas phase and solid phase are different.

(a) For H2O2 structure in gas phase, dihedral angle is 111.5. The observed bond length for 𝑂−𝐻 and 𝑂−𝑂 bond found to be 95 pm and 147.5 pm respectively. Also, the angle between 𝑂−𝑂 and 𝑂−𝐻 bond was observed as 94.8.

For H2O2 structure in solid phase at 110 K, dihedral angle is 90.2 . The observed bond length for 𝑂−𝐻 and 𝑂−𝑂 bond found to be 98.8 pm and 145.8 pm respectively. Also, the angle between 𝑂−𝑂 and 𝑂−𝐻 bond was observed as 101.9.
