Question

Draw the graph of the equation, 2x - 3y = 5.

From your graph, find (i) the value of y when x = 4 and (ii) the value of x when y = 3.

Solution

Given equation :
2x - 3y = 5⇒ 2x = 3y + 5

x=3y+52
When, y=1,x=3+52=1
When, y=3,x=9+52=2
Plot the points (-2, -3) , (1,-1) on the graph paper and extend the line in both directions.
(i) When x = 4:

plot a point A on x-axis such that OA =4. Draw a parallel line to y-axis to meet the given line at B. Draw a parallel line to x-axis to meet y-axis at C.

OC = y = 1

(ii) When y = 3:
following the similar procedure as above, we get

x=7
