Question

Draw the graphs of following equations,
(i) x + 2y = 10; (ii) 2x + y + 5 = 0

Answer the following questions.
(1) Write the co-ordinates of a point where the first line cuts Y-axis.
(2) Find 'a' if point (−2, a) lies on the second line.

Solution

(i) x + 2y = 10

The table with the values of x and y satisfying the given equation is shown below:
x 2 0
y 4 5

(ii) 2x + y +5 = 0

The table with the values of x and y satisfying the given equation is shown below:
x 0 -2.5
y -5 0

The graph of the lines is as shown:

(1) The coordinate of the point where the line x+2y = 10 cuts Y-axis is (0,5).
(2) The value of a is -1.
We have shown this in the graph.
