Solution

Respiratory system:

The respiratory system in humans includes the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi and the lungs.

  1. Nose:
    • The two openings in the nose are known as nostrils that lead to the nasal chamber.
    • It has a hairy lining to prevent dust particles from reaching into the lungs.
  2. Pharynx:
    • The pharynx is the narrow tubular part which acts as a common passage for food and air.
    • The air inhaled through the nostrils passes into the pharynx and then enters the air tube called the trachea.
  3. Larynx:
    • The larynx is a thin-walled tubular structure present in the neck region which is known as the voice box.
  4. Trachea:
    • The larynx is followed by a long tubular structure known as the trachea or windpipe.
  5. Bronchi:
    • The trachea posteriorly divides into two main structures known as primary bronchi and secondary bronchi.
    • Bronchi is a long narrow tube through which air passes from the trachea to the lungs.
    • These bronchi split into numerous branches known as bronchioles.
    • The terminal ends of bronchioles bulge out to form extremely thin-walled tiny air pockets known as alveoli.
  6. Lungs:
    • Lungs are the chief respiratory organs where the exchange of gases takes place.
    • It is a pair of spongy, elastic organs that lies in the thoracic cavity.
