Question 45
Draw the structure of a neuron and explain its function.
A neuron (also known as a neurone or nerve cell) is a cell that carries nerve impulses. Neurons are the basic units of the nervous system and its most important part is the brain. Every neuron is made of a cell body (also called a soma), dendrites and an axon. Dendrites and axons are nerve fibres.
Functions of the three parts of a neuron:
Dendrite: It receives information from the axon of another cell and conducts the messages towards the cell body.
Axon: It conducts messages away from the cell body.
Cell body: It contains the nucleus, mitochondria, and other organelles. It is mainly concerned with the maintenance and growth.
The overall function of the neuron is to transmit the nerve impulses.
