Question

Draw the velocity-time graph for a particle travelling with uniform acceleration ‘a’ and an initial velocity ‘u’. Show how you would find the displacement in a given time.

Solution

Drawing graph : 1 Mark
Finding displacement : 2 Marks

image

PQ represents the velocity-time graph, OP represents the initial velocity u, QS represent, the velocity v at the end of 8 seconds.

2nd part

Suppose using the graph, you want to find the displacement in a given time, say 8 second, draw a perpendicular at ’8’ to meet the graph at Q. Then the area PQRSO is the required displacement. The figure is obviously a trapezium. Here u and v are the parallel sides and t is the altitudes.

Note: If the acceleration is not uniform the graph will not be straight line, it will be a curve, the nature of the curve depending on the nature of the variation of the acceleration.
