Question

Drosophila can have the following alleles for eye colour: red, white, apricot, eosine, wine, coral, cherry etc. Show by diagram, how many of these alleles will be present in one fly?

Solution

The genes for eye color in Drosophila are variations of the same gene or multiple alleles (as the allelic number is more than two). Since the genes are alleles they are located at the same loci of homologous chromosomes (a pair of autosomes). Therefore only two of the alleles will be present in one fly.
