Vernalization is the phenomenon in which flowering depends on the exposure to low temperatures. Vernalization helps the plant achieve proper vegetative growth which is a period of growth of the plant between germination and flowering. Based on which seasons the plant is sown and when it flowers, plants can be described as:


A spring variety of annual plants are planted in spring, grow and flower by the end of autumn. Winter varieties of annual plants are planted in autumn, germinate in winter, grow in spring, and are harvested usually during mid-summer. If these winter varieties are planted in spring then they would normally fail to flower or develop mature grains. These phenomena can be easily understood from the following diagram:


However, bad weather during winters can be detrimental to a winter variety of wheat crops. To prevent that, the winter variety of wheat can also be sown in spring by applying artificial vernalisation. It can help in the induction of the flowering process by the introduction of cold temperatures in the plant environment.
Pruning is a process of selective removal of plant parts such as leaves, branches, etc. In harsh weather conditions like early winters, pruning might harm the plants as the incised plant parts can dry out if the temperature drops too low.
Using high saline soil will reduce the growth of plants. As salt is accumulated in tissues it destroys the leaves leading to the death of the plants.
