As carbon is having 6 electrons and in the outer shell, it is having only 4 electrons so it requires 4 more electrons to complete its octet. so when it occurs in carbonium ion form it is sp2 hybridized atom and sp2 hybridization with a +ve charge on it make it a very unstable atom.
