Question

During a tennis match, a player serves at 23.6 ms1, the ball leaving the racquet horizontally 2.37 m above the court surface. By how much does the ball clear the net which is 12 m away and 0.9 m high? (answer in metres)

Solution

Let t be the time taken by the ball to clear the net.
Horizontal distance between the racquet and the net =12 m
12=uxt=23.6×t

Height by which ball will fall in time t is
y=12gt2=12×10×(1223.6)2=1.3 m

Let h be the height above the net at which at the ball will pass it.
Then, 2.37=y+h+0.9
h=2.370.91.3=0.17 m
