Question

During a thunderstorm, rain water contains nitric acid. Explain with reaction.

Solution

The nitrogen present in the atmosphere reacts with oxygen to form nitric oxide during lightning.

N2(g)nitrogen+O2(g)oxygen2NO(g)nitricoxide

Then the nitric oxide is further oxidised to nitrogen dioxide.

2NO(g)nitricoxide+O2(g)oxygen2NO2(g)nitrogendioxide

In the atmosphere the nitrogen dioxide dissolves in presence of oxygen and forms nitric acid which is washed down by rain combines with salt on the surface of the earth.

4NO2(g)nitrogendioxide+2H2O(l)rainwater+O2(g)oxygen4HNO3(g)nitricacid
