During boiling of water, why thermometer does not show any rise in temperature after reaching 100 degree Celsius mark even after heat is provided?
Heat provided is used in breaking the intermolecular forces.
The main reason for no rise in temperature is nothing but the heat provided is utilized in breaking the bonds within the molecules of water. This breaking of bonds convert the water into the vapour. This heat which is not visible on the thermometer is known as Latent Heat of vapourization.
