Question

During the conversion of O2 to to O2-, the incoming electron goes to the orbital?

Solution

Molecular orbital diagram of O2:

  • The configuration of O2 : (σ1s)2(σ1s)2(σ2s)2(σ2s)2(σ2p)2(π2px)2(π2py)2(π2px)1(π2py)1
  • To convert O2 to O2- one electron needs to be added in the orbital configuration of O2.
  • As per Aufbau's principle the electrons enters in lower energy orbital first.
  • So from the orbital diagram we can see that electron will enter in π*2px orbital.

Hence, During the conversion of O2 to to O2-, the incoming electron goes to π*2px orbital.
