During gastrulation, the 3 germ layers and the notochord is formed. The notochord is mesodermal in origin, it causes the ectoderm above it to roll and then form a plate-like structure known as the neural plate. The ectoderm then rolls over and forms a tube-like structure i.e the neural tube that settles below the ectoderm. This is the first organ that develops in the embryo. The neural tube develops into the brain and spinal cord.
