During electrolysis why is it important to have the electrodes dipped in electrolyte

Electrodes should be completely dipped into an electrolyte solution so that electricity can be passed and electrical circuit of the battery will get completed. during electrolysis, it is important for electrodes to be dipped into electrolyte to make cathode and anode in connection with some conducting materials which van separate the Catains and anains.!
