The diaphragm is a muscular structure that separates the thoracic cavity (lungs) from the abdominal cavity (stomach). In its relaxed state, the diaphragm is shaped like a dome.
During inhalation, the diaphragm contracts making it flatter and it moves away from the chest cavity. During exhalation the diaphragm relaxes and moves up towards the chest cavity.
